The School of Mathematics and Information Science was authorized to grant master's degrees in 1981 and doctoral degrees in 1998. Currently, the school offers a first-level doctoral degree in Mathematics; first-level master's degrees in Computer Science and Technology, Software Engineering, and History of Science and Technology; and professional master's degrees in Education and Engineering. Among these, Mathematics is listed as a characteristic and strong discipline in Hebei Province, with Computer Application Technology and Applied Mathematics as key disciplines at the university level. Additionally, the school hosts the provincial key laboratory - the Hebei Provincial Key Laboratory of Computational Mathematics and Applications, as well as a postdoctoral research station in Mathematics.
Since 1978, when our college began enrolling master's students, we have trained about 700 doctoral and master's students over 33 sessions. Currently, there are 23 doctoral students and 233 master's students enrolled. Over the years, our disciplines have produced a large number of outstanding graduates, many of whom have become key figures in universities and research institutions at home and abroad, such as National Outstanding Youth Fund recipients and Chang Jiang Scholars Liu Jianya and Li Zenghu, and Liu Peidong. Many graduates have also become the backbone of basic education. In terms of graduate education, our discipline has maintained a high standard of quality. Since 2002, we have trained 64 doctoral graduates, 17 of whom have received funding from 30 projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China. In the past five years, 6 doctoral theses have been recognized as "Excellent Doctoral Theses in Hebei Province," and 6 master's theses as "Excellent Master's Theses in Hebei Province." Ji Kui's thesis in 2010 was selected as a "National Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation," the only one from a local university's Mathematics discipline among the 49 awarded in Mathematics up to that year.
We have introduced Professors Xiong Jie, Xu Feng, Suolin, Gong Guihua, and Zhao Kaiming from renowned foreign institutions to guide graduate teaching and research, and select outstanding doctoral graduates for further studies at famous institutions at home and abroad. Flexible academic systems have been implemented, with master's students Li Zhiqiang and Liu Zhe recommended for doctoral studies abroad. In 2007, the master's thesis of Hao Xulan in Education was recognized as the first national outstanding professional degree thesis in Education. This flexible and distinct training model creates an excellent environment for talent cultivation. The college has also established a graduate research fund to encourage academically and morally excellent doctoral and master's students to engage in research work early on.
