The German mathematician Felix Klein once remarked, "Mathematics is humanity's most sublime intellectual achievement and the most unique creation of the human spirit. Music can inspire or soothe the emotions, painting delights the eye, poetry touches the heart, philosophy grants wisdom, technology improves material life, but mathematics can provide all of the above." This lecture will briefly explore the beauty, truth, fun, challenges, and utility of mathematics, along with various mathematical stories from ancient to modern times and from cultures around the world.
Speaker Introduction:
Tan Shaobin is a Distinguished Professor and doctoral supervisor at Xiamen University. He completed his PhD at the University of Saskatchewan in Canada and conducted postdoctoral research at the Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical Sciences at the University of Toronto. He currently serves as the Dean of the School of Mathematical Sciences at Xiamen University and the Director of the Executive Committee of the National Tianyuan Mathematics Southeast Center. He has held positions such as Assistant to the President of Xiamen University, Director of Academic Affairs, and Director of International Cooperation and Exchanges. He is a member of the Mathematics Subject Evaluation Group of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council and the Ministry of Education’s Higher Education Teaching Guidance Committee. Tan is also an Executive Director of the Chinese Mathematical Society and Vice President of the Fujian Provincial Mathematical Society. He is on the editorial boards of academic journals such as Acta Mathematica Sinica, Journal of Mathematical Study, Advances in Mathematics (China), and Applied Mathematics. He has received the first-class Science and Technology Progress Award from the Commission of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense, the Baosteel Outstanding Teacher Award, and enjoys a special government allowance from the State Council. He currently leads key projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the Mathematical Tianyuan Fund.
